The Zsóry Bath

Did you know that a number of our thermal baths were established thanks to oil miners? The crude oil and natural gas fields of Hungary were moved outside the borders due to the Treaty of Trianon. This practically led to an oil crisis, so the search for oil was launched in 1920. Nothing was found for over a decade but the first successful searches started happening in the second half of the 30s. Despite the difficult times we cannot really say these searches were carried out in vain as many trial drillings yielded thermal water instead of oil.

Lajos Zsóry, a Member of Parliament, also carried out a search for oil on his own land in 1939. We can guess how his story ended. Instead of ‘black gold’ he faced a 30 meter high water column springing up above the surface. The carbohydrate well was consequently turned into a water well and instead of an oil field, a bath was built in Mezőkövesd.

It also became clear that the water was rich in minerals – especially in sulphur – and so the water was officially deemed thermal water in 1968. The bath has been getting bigger and nicer ever since and today it is the most popular bath in northern Hungary. The fact that Mezőkövesd was awarded the title of qualified medicinal place in 2013 elevated the bath’s status even further.

The Zsóry Bath is a true place of joy in summer and winter alike. There are three different thermal pools with varying temperatures as well as Jacuzzis and children’s pools inside. You can enjoy the hot thermal water outside even in the coldest winter. During the summer season we open the outdoor spa pools and children’s paddling pools. One of our most memorable pools is one that was built back in 1979 after a Soviet model, which is ring-shaped and 72 meters wide, with a 50 meter built-in wave pool in the centre. An interesting fact is that the bath purchased the most up-to-date Austrian water cleansing system at the time.
